Why might I need a dental crown?

There are several reasons you might need a dental crown. One of the most common uses for dental crowns at our Canton, MA practice is because we need to “cap” a tooth that has become fractured or otherwise damaged because of a very large filling. Over time, fillings eventually fail, often leading to small fractures in the tooth. Because so much of the tooth structure has already been removed, it is not possible to replace the filling. The best option to not only save your tooth but to restore its function is to use a dental crown.

Other reasons for dental crowns include:

  • To strengthen and protect a tooth that has been treated with a root canal. Because a root canal removes the nerves and living tissue of a tooth, the remaining structure becomes brittle. A dental crown will make it strong enough so you can chew on it as you normally would.
  • To restore a tooth that has become damaged or otherwise compromised.
  • To cover up a tooth that is misshapen or badly stained.

Dental crowns are also used in conjunction with dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Dental crowns are made to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth.
