Children's Dentistry

At Sequoia Family Dental, we want to treat the entire family, so we are pleased to welcome children to our practice for general and preventive care. Our goal is to get your young ones accustomed to visiting the dentist at an early age, to set them up for a lifetime of good oral health habits. Children who go to the dentist regularly tend to grow into adults who also go to the dentist regularly.

Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that kids come to the dentist around their first birthday. This coincides with the eruption of their first teeth, a milestone for children and an opportunity for us to take the fear of the unknown out of the dental equation.

We will take our time with your child, and we will not do anything that will make him or her uncomfortable. This first “spin” in the dental chair is primarily to show children there is nothing to fear at the dentist. We always explain to your child, using age-appropriate language, what he or she can expect during treatment. When treatment is needed, we always move at whatever pace makes your child most comfortable.

This appointment also gives us the opportunity to discuss proper oral care with parents. We can also answer any questions parents might have about what they can expect as their child grows, how to handle habits such as thumb-sucking or pacifier use, and any other concerns they might have.

Preventive Treatment for Kids

As with adult oral care, our focus is on preventive dentistry when it comes to your children. To that end, we offer examinations and cleanings. Although children will eventually lose their primary teeth when their adult teeth come in, the baby teeth play an important role in proper oral development. For this reason, it’s crucial to take good care of them.

We can talk to you about sealants and fluoride treatments to help with cavity prevention. Although municipal water fluoridation has gone a long way in reducing the number of cavities in this country, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

  • Fluoride treatment—We use a professional-strength topical fluoride on your child’s teeth, which will harden the enamel to protect the teeth from developing cavities.
  • Dental sealants—These provide a barrier from bacteria settling in on the surface of your child’s teeth. Primarily used on the back molars, dental sealants are noninvasive and cost much less than filling cavities. Treatment lasts several years before reapplication is necessary.
